DISTRICT 9 2009

District 9 is a recent film that involves Aliens. A lot of retro-futurism assumes that in the future we will encounter Extra-Terrestrials so i wanted to see a more to-date film that involved them.

MOON 2009

I chose to watch this film for visual inspiration but was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a really good film that i thoroughly enjoyed.
Moon is about an astronaut, Sam, who is on the Moon extracting helium-3 from lunar soil for much-needed clean energy back on Earth. He is meant to be on a 3-year contract but soon finds out that after the three years home isn't where he would be going.

I studied this film due to the fact that there was a lot of spacey imagery that i could choose to look at further as well as a lot of futuristic space technology and mobiles that can inspire me.

2010: THE YEAR WE MADE CONTACT

An amazing film again relating to space. It was filmed in 1984 and is about a crew of astronauts and scientists going on a mission to find out what happened to the old 'Discovery' spacecraft. Turns out all the 'Discovery' crew members had died but do discover and investigate the Monoliths (fictional advanced machines built by an unseen extraterrestrial species). Eventually the Monoliths engulf jupiter and turn it into a sun, thus giving the Earth two suns.

This film is another good example of Retro-Futurism, looking into the year 2010 from the year 1984.

DARK STAR 1974

This film was recommended for me as an old sci-fi film that i could watch for inspiration. It focuses more on space rather than the future but this is definitely an aspect that i want to concentrate on. I feel that combining the two i can create a really good idea of what space exploration could be like in the future.

BLADE RUNNER (1986)

Recently i have been thinking about films which look at the future from the past, one that cropped up a lot was Blade Runner, based in 2019, Rick Deckard an ex-police officer has to round up and 'retire' (kill) any 'Replicants' (engineered humanoids). there i a whole range of futuristic aspects such as; hover cars, laser guns, 'Googie' architecture etc.

It isn't surprising that a lot of old space films involve aliens and robots. recently i have watched the film, 'Forbidden Planet', hoping for some sort of retro brain-wave.

YEASAYER AMBLING ALP + O.N.E FUTURISTIC MUSIC VIDEOS

I am very interested in the new videos for the band Yeasayer both O.N.E and Ambling Alp have very phychadelic themes. i like the trippy feel both have and will be looking to explore this idea in my work.
